Daily fragments
Julio
I’m a failed musician. I’ve come to terms that I may never write a ‘complete’ song having absorbed John Cage’s thoughts on music/sound. Here are some of those fragments now. Enjoy (or not).
Influences : Tom Waits, John Cage, Fugazi, Gang of Four, Electrelane, Crass.

The talent to be found @ Lincoln High School is quite astonishing. This done with whiteout, black construction paper, black & red pen. Now when you overhear an artist mentioning not having any money to express themselves, you can show them this and show them they are full of shit.
Diatribe end.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then He is not omnipotent.
Is He able, but not willing? Then He is malevolent.
Is He both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is He neither able nor willing? Then why call Him God?– Epicurus

Duty of work, originally uploaded by un día sin chile es como un día sin sol.
Inspired by a philosophy paper I’ve been working on. Subject being the self, and the ethical cultivation of the self in the face of nothingness.

watch it now!

Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs performing “Wooly Bully” ; one of my ALL-TIME favorite songs. First heard it as a kid in the opening scenes of Splash. Turns out the lead singer is a Chicano from Dallas, Texas thus explaining the iconic count-off of:
“Uno-dos! one-two-tres-quatro!“
And I think we can figure out what “Wooly Bully” means
.More oldies I love after the jump:

I love the sound of the organ in the beginning of Wooly Bully. Nothing complex but the sound is hugeeeee. Ha! I also love how his voice cracks, real shiiaat right there. Rosetta Tharpe played some smooth riffs. Had some vinyl of hers come my way for free! Too bad my record player is busted
Good jams though. There’s a comp called Pachuco Soul: Sounds of East LA out there. Pretty cool comp, been trying to get my hands on the vinyl version.

on distraction
Julio

It’s Sunday afternoon. Breakfast made & eaten. Coffee brewed & drunk. I think about all the things to be done and the things I do to distract myself from doing them :
- emails
- listening to records
- drinking more coffee
- cleaning
- parousing through my small library
- watching Current TV
- browsing ‘ubuntu‘ stuff on the interwebz
- going on some daylight rides (pffft to midnight ridez)
- writing new blog posts
And when I am absolutely free to do whatever I like I more often than not I end up twiddling my thumbs. At a loss as to do what to do. Maybe I need some time management for anarchists.
-
EL CHAVO!
Ha,ha, that time management thing is awesome! Did you notice the line “the tyranny of minutiae”?

EL CHAVO!
For the record, I was having a similar day, and I even have a list of all the things I need to get done. But after reading your list I decided to pull the cobwebs off my bike and visit the arroyo. Some emails, lots o’ coffee, ironing while I watched a futbol match, out of nowhere thought of the band A.P.P.L.E. (gonna look for the mp3s), and now settling into my computer lair to try and write up a post.
So it was kinda productive while I goofed around. Yay!

in grind, we crust
Julio

I spent a large part of my youth indulging in crusty, noisy, punk music & I still love it. I physically become happier when I hear those simplistic beats and screaming vocals. The following are some favorites of mine.

I saw Antischism a couple of times in ‘90 and ‘91. At the time I didn’t really appreciate them, but over the years they have grown on me and are now one of the few crust bands that I like.
-
EL CHAVO!
I skipped crust but I bet if they were part of my scene it would still have an impact on me. I’ve been listening to some of my favorite punk stuff from back in the day, and I still like it but can see why others would think its absolute garbage. But they don’t know shit.
